Hydrogen Economy - the System of the Future PDF Print E-mail

The concept of the “Green Hydrogen Economy”, that we advance, has some important differences to other more conventional models. The most important of these is the decentralization of the energy system.

But what exactly does that mean? “Decentral” simply means that the conversion of energy to electricity, that we use at home, does not happen in some far away power plants but directly in your own house.

The big advantage of this decentralized system is, that the waste heat which is automatically being generated during the transformation of fuel into electricity can directly be used in your house, for example for warm water or for heating. Presently, the power plants can not use this heat, they even have to install enormous cooling systems to keep their plants working properly. In the Green Hydrogen Economy, these huge amounts of heat are used immediately, thus they are an integral part of the energy supply rather then a hindrance.

The system is based on hydrogen (H2). Hydrogen will be serving as an energy carrier which will make our today’s global power grid to become dispensable. Instead, the hydrogen, which is produced in factories, is lead to the consumer through pipelines. In your house, the hydrogen is then transformed into heat and electricity. In Germany, the required piping system already exists (for the most part) but it is presently used for distributing natural gas. The losses of energy that occur during the transport of hydrogen through the pipelines are far less than those arising in the electricity grid - yet another advantage. Additionally, spare hydrogen can easily be stored, which is very inefficient and difficult with electricity.

But there are even more advantages: biomass is a renewable resource. Everyone knows about the threatening oil shortage and its implications. In contrast to the fossil fuels we are using in the moment, hydrogen (which will mostly be produced from biomass) will not run out some time in the future. The Green Hydrogen Economy solely utilizes renewable energy.

Additionally, the system is more environmentally friendly then the current - in opposite to the vast amount of greenhouse gases and other environment pollutants that power plants of the presence emit, hydrogen factories are only going to emit the same amount of carbon dioxide that was previously stored in the biomass, this can then be stored in reservoirs to prevent CO2 emissions. Accordingly, the Green Hydrogen Economy is completely climate neutral! Contrary to popular belief, hydrogen is also more secure than our present system - as evidenced by several studies. And yet another strong argument for the hydrogen concept: (armed) conflicts over oil could finally come to an end - hydrogen can be produced and used independently almost everywhere.

Overall, the Green Hydrogen economy is efficient, social, friendly to the environment, secure and renewable. It is not just an alternative but a new beginning - a promising one!
